Are you unhappy with your smile due to overcrowding, gaps, or bite misalignment?

Invisalign® can straighten your teeth more discreetly and more comfortably than traditional braces.

Smiles for Life, serving the greater Harrisonburg and Staunton, VA, area, can use Invisalign to give you the smile you've always wanted...

What Is Invisalign?

invisalign tray
Instead of using metal brackets and wires, this option uses clear, removable aligner trays to correct a wide range of orthodontic issues. Every two weeks, patients use a new set of aligners, which gradually move the teeth and bite into proper alignment. Most patients go through 20 to 30 sets of aligner trays before the entire treatment process is complete. For qualified individuals, Invisalign can be just as effective as traditional braces.

Why Choose Invisalign?

Invisalign offers benefits to our patients in Greater Harrisonburg that other forms of orthodontic treatment simply can't provide:

The smooth plastic aligner trays fit snugly over teeth and are virtually invisible, allowing you to smile and speak without feeling self-conscious.

The trays are more comfortable than traditional braces because the smooth surfaces do not irritate the soft tissues of the mouth.

You can conveniently remove the aligners when you eat so you can enjoy a full range of foods, and brush and floss as normal.

Fewer Appointments

This option also requires fewer checkups than braces, which typically require tightening appointments every four weeks.

Insurance Coverage

Many insurance plans cover Invisalign. Coverage will vary based on your policy so we can handle contacting your provider for additional details.

Are You a Candidate for Invisalign?

Young woman holding invisalign

Invisalign for Teens

Teens are excellent candidates for Invisalign. Many teenage patients prefer the simplicity and comfort of Invisalign aligners to metal brackets and wires. The invisible aligners also help teens avoid feeling self-conscious about wearing metal braces.

Invisalign for Adults

Adults can also benefit from the comfort and discreetness of Invisalign. The aligner trays can straighten smiles without being conspicuous, which means few if any interruptions at your job, at social engagements, or while completing your daily routines.

Additional Considerations for Invisalign Treatment

Traditional braces may be more suitable for severe malocclusion, crowding, or gaps. During a consultation, our dentists will carefully evaluate your bite to recommend the right course of treatment.

Because Invisalign trays are removable, you must be consistent and fully dedicated to the process. If it is likely that you will forget to wear your clear aligners, another form of orthodontics may be more appropriate for you.

Thanks for the personal care from all the staff, nurses, and Dr. Joe McIntyre. They walked me through the whole process. Everything went smoothly. They made themselves available in the evening so I did not have to miss any work for my dental implant treatment.

The Invisalign Timeline
What to Expect

In about 12 to 18 months, you can have a straighter smile and improved confidence.
In about 12 to 18 months, you can have a straighter smile and improved confidence.

Digital Scanning

To prepare for Invisalign, your dentist will take 3D digital scans of your mouth.

Preview Your Results

We strive to make sure our patients are fully informed about the procedures they choose, so we will show you a digital preview illustrating the projected movement of your teeth.

Aligner Fabrication

Your unique plan will be sent to the Invisalign lab, where technicians will craft your aligners from clear, smooth plastic. Your customized aligner trays will be based on the digital images taken at our office so they fit precisely and produce your desired results.

Wearing the Aligners

Once the trays are finished, you will wear each one for about two weeks. With their slightly different shapes, the aligners exert mild pressure on your teeth, gradually straightening your smile. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and wear your trays for 20 to 22 hours a day.

Cleaning the Aligners

You must also clean the aligners daily to prevent decay, gum disease, and tooth discoloration. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm water to remove any debris that accumulates. It is also important to brush and floss daily.

Follow-Up Appointments

You will return to our office every six weeks so we can monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.

Completing Treatment

Once you have worn your last pair of aligner trays for two weeks, your treatment is considered complete. At this point, you may wish to undergo whitening or another cosmetic dentistry treatment to further enhance your smile.

What Should I Avoid
During Treatment?

  • Eating with your aligners on
  • Drinking hot or colored beverages with your aligners on
  • Smoking or using chewing tobacco during treatment
  • Cleaning aligners with harsh substances
  • Leaving aligners out in the open air
  • Exposing the aligner trays to heat

Invisalign Alternatives

Invisalign isn't right for everyone. We invite patients from the greater Harrisonburg area to schedule an appointment at either our Bridgewater or Staunton dental offices so we can determine which orthodontic technique is right for you or your child's unique needs.
Six Month Smiles®

Six Month Smiles®

This treatment option involves the placement of clear brackets and wires on the front-facing teeth. Because this technique is focused on the cosmetic correction of the anterior teeth, treatment can be completed quickly, typically in just six months. However, this option is not ideal for patients who have severe bite misalignment.

Traditional Braces

Braces also involve the placement of brackets and wires, but they can be placed on the front and back teeth to produce the best possible aesthetic and functional results. Although many patients would prefer to wear clear aligners, braces are often the best treatment option for patients with significant overcrowding and bite issues.

Invisalign FAQ

What Is the Average Cost of Invisalign Treatment?

On average, Invisalign costs between $4,000 to $7,400. This national price range is comparable to the cost of traditional metal braces and ceramic braces. During your consultation, we can provide a full breakdown of the costs involved, and discuss insurance coverage and financing.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

For most patients, Invisalign treatment takes about a year to a year and a half to complete. That means in about 12 to 18 months, you can have a straighter smile and improved confidence. Keep in mind that treatment times can vary based on how misaligned a person's teeth are.

Does Wearing New Aligners Hurt?

Switching to a new clear aligner can cause some soreness in the first few days as your teeth shift position. The mild pain doesn't last long, however. It can be helpful to switch to a new aligner before going to bed in order to sleep through the initial discomfort.

If I Have Braces Now, Can I Switch to Invisalign?

Maybe. Some patients have been able to switch from wearing braces to Invisalign without any issues. It depends on your treatment plan, and how much tooth movement is required. If this idea sounds appealing to you, be sure to discuss this option with your dentist or orthodontist.

Will I Need a Retainer After I've Completed Invisalign Treatment?

A retainer is common after orthodontic care to prevent teeth from shifting out of their corrected alignment. Your post-treatment needs may vary. As part of the consultation process, we will review what happens once treatment is over, and how we can best maintain your dental health for years to come.

Dr. McIntyre and Whiting are both amazing dentists. Before meeting my husband who was a long time patient of the practice I was a patient of another dental office in Harrisonburg. I dreaded going to the dentist because of the pain and discomfort. I've never felt discomfort at their office; they are very patient centered and really want the best for their patients. I had a problem with a crown fitting my invisaligners, made 1 quick call and they fit me to in to fix it no problem! I recommend them every chance I can, wonderful practice!

My full dental exam and X-rays went well. The hygienist (Cathy) was patient, very pleasant, and moved through the X-rays and cleaning like the pro that she clearly is. I appreciated that. Doctor Rocky is fantastic as well, she carefully explained everything and answered my questions thoroughly. This organization will be my dentists for now on—I have found my dental home!
