Dental Bridge Options
Traditional Bridges
A dental bridge, sometimes called a partial denture, is designed to replace one or more missing teeth to restore the balance, function, and appearance of your smile. Traditional bridges, or the pontic, rely on dental crowns that are placed on each adjacent healthy tooth for support.
This approach offers several benefits to patients. Total treatment time is much quicker because surgery is not required. This also results in a lower treatment cost. In many cases, dental insurance will cover the full cost of a traditional bridge. In addition, implant-retained restorations offer the best stability.
The downside is that traditional bridges require each healthy surrounding tooth to be shaved down to accommodate the dental crowns; also, this dentistry treatment doesn't prevent jawbone atrophy, which results in changes in the shape of the dental arches and face over time.

Implant-Supported Bridges
Bridges can be attached to dental implants, which are titanium posts designed to replace lost tooth roots. Implants require surgery, but they allow you to avoid the alteration of healthy teeth, and are the only solution that can prevent jawbone atrophy after teeth have been lost.
Though implants require a greater investment of time and money than a traditional bridge, we usually recommend that patients consider this option due to the many benefits it provides. If you are in good periodontal health and are a non-smoker, you are likely a candidate for dental implants.
