A pair of clean aligners sits in a mouthguard protectorBy investing in Invisalign® treatment, you are investing in your smile and your future. Taking careful steps to clean and maintain your Invisalign aligner trays will ensure that you do not suffer tooth decay. Clean aligners are also more cosmetically pleasing.

In this blog post, we outline easy tips and advice that should be followed carefully. Our office proudly serves Bridgewater, VA, and Staunton, VA.

Caring for Your Aligners

Taking steps to clean and protect your aligners can save you time and money. Lost aligners are not cheap to replace, and damaged trays could mean that your treatment timeline is delayed by weeks. Here are proven tips that can keep your orthodontic treatment on track.

Regularly Rinse Your Aligners

Rinsing off your aligners (especially after eating) can prevent buildup from forming. Food particles can form plaque on the inside of your trays for the same reason it forms on the outside of your teeth. If food particles are not regularly rinsed off, they will form a tough film that will be hard to remove.

Buildup inside your aligners is unsightly, and it can even lead to tooth decay. Get in the habit of rinsing off your aligners with lukewarm water to prevent unwanted problems.

Avoid Using Toothpaste to Clean Your Trays

Toothpaste may seem like a harmless cleaning agent for your trays. The ingredients in toothpaste work great on teeth, but they can leave a white film on your trays. This can obscure your trays with an undesirable appearance.

A toothbrush and warm water are effective tools for cleaning your trays.

Buy a Mouthguard Holder

You don’t want to lose your aligner trays. When eating or speaking at a meeting, keep your trays in a mouthguard holder so they don’t get lost. This will also keep them clean while they are not in use.

Brush Before Placing Your Trays

Brushing is especially important before you go to sleep with your aligners in. If possible, brush your teeth before placing your aligners. You may need to keep an extra toothbrush at the office, but the benefits are worth it. Keeping your teeth clean will ensure that your aligners remain clear and your teeth never develop tooth decay.

Avoid Hot Water

Dipping your trays into a hot cup of water might seem like a great way to remove food sediment, but the hot water will warp and disfigure Invisalign’s SmartTrack material. Your best bet is to keep your trays far away from any source of hot water.

Report Lost Aligners Trays

If your trays do become lost or damaged, let someone at our office know immediately. The longer you go without your trays in place, the more uncomfortable resuming your treatment may be. In some cases, patients can proceed to the next aligner set if the current one is lost or damaged.
