Team Seminar 2017!

By Riley Hebdon on September 12, 2017

This year, Smiles for Life’s Team Seminar was amazing! On Wednesday afternoon, we packed up our cars and headed down to Outer Banks for a weekend of learning, team building, and fun.

Dr. Whiting started each morning off with a Fun Run—whatever that’s supposed to be!

Then it was time for classes! Throughout the seminar, members of our staff took the time to teach us important lessons for the office and for life. Becky taught us about the importance of clear communication with the help of some mouthguards. Janitza (aka Ms. Virginia Woman of Achievement) helped us gain self-confidence. Dr. McIntyre reiterated why presentation is key. Dr. Whiting showed our team why preparation matters.  And Dr. Rockey discussed the five different love languages and how we can apply them to the office.

We played lots and lots of team building games. The goal of each game was to determine what makes our office run, what obstacles we run into, and how we can work through them as a team, supporting each other along the way, even while blindfolded!

Every year, our office does an “Award Ceremony.” Each staff member draws the name of another staff member and has to make an award for that person! The award can be silly, serious, or heartwarming, but they must celebrate that person in some way. We had lots of really creative and amazing awards this year!

We ate tons of delicious food! Dr. McIntyre’s birthday was on September 2nd, so as part of our seminar, we celebrated his birthday with ice cream sundaes. Janitza particularly enjoyed our taco salad meal with tons of homemade guacamole!

One of the highlights of our seminar was the night that we all went out and flew kites in the sunset! It was so surreal and beautiful to stand up on the sand dunes and watch all the kites get higher and higher. Reeling them in was a less beautiful part!

On the last day of the seminar, we all took a moment to discuss what our favorite part was. Some enjoyed the classes or the games or the food or the beach, but almost every single person mentioned that the greatest part was getting to know one another better. It was such a great bonding experience to leave the office and focus on one another for a few days. Can’t wait ‘til next year!
