Why Porcelain Veneers Eventually Must Be Replaced
At Smiles for Life Dental Care, we take great pride in using only the finest materials in every dental restoration we offer, including our custom-crafted, aesthetically stunning porcelain veneers. Our porcelain veneers are designed to provide years of beautiful smiles, standing up to the rigors of everyday biting, chewing, and speaking. Whether patients require one or two cosmetically flawed teeth to be treated with porcelain veneers or a full smile makeover, they can expect to emerge from treatment with smiles that look as natural as they do healthy and radiant.
Patients should understand, however, that even the most meticulously crafted porcelain veneers will eventually need to be replaced. While our porcelain veneers are strong, highly durable, and extremely hard-wearing, they are not intended to be permanent. With proper oral hygiene and regular visits to our office for check-ups, they could last for as long as a decade and possibly even longer, but they will eventually become worn or dislodged. When this happens, new porcelain veneers will have to be placed on the teeth.
Our dentists discuss porcelain veneers replacement during consultations at our Harrisonburg, VA cosmetic, restorative, and general dentistry practice so that patients know precisely what to expect before committing to treatment. If you would like to find out whether porcelain veneers are right for you, we encourage you to schedule your initial consultation with one of our esteemed dentists at Smiles for Life Dental Care today.
Why Is It Necessary to Replace Porcelain Veneers Eventually?
As part of the preparation process before placing porcelain veneers, our dentists remove a tiny amount of enamel - approximately the width of an eggshell - from the surfaces of the teeth to be treated. This creates a suitable bonding surface. While this is a very small amount of enamel, it is enough that the tooth could never again “go naked” - that is, it could never again appear aesthetically pleasing or function properly without being covered by a porcelain veneer. Without this coverage, it would also be prone to sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures and damage from bacterial plaque.
Fortunately, as a patient of Smiles for Life Dental Care, you can rest assured that you won’t have to worry about replacing your porcelain veneers often. Your veneers will be made of the highest-grade medical porcelain, which is highly resistant to staining, cracking, and chipping. As long as you take proper care of your teeth and avoid such habits as chewing on ice, fingernails, and pen caps, your porcelain veneers should last for many years.
Of course, you should also visit our office twice a year for thorough oral exams and professional cleanings as recommended by the American Dental Association. However, this is true whether or not you have porcelain veneers!
