Crooked, uneven teeth can make patients feel self conscious and insecure about their appearance. Cosmetic dentistry treatments, like Invisalign®, can address a variety of dental flaws to transform the smile and boost confidence. Invisalign® is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment designed to reposition crooked teeth using a series of discreet, clear aligners. Invisalign® treatment is a gradual process, and although many achieve their desired in a similar timeframe as traditional orthodontic methods, treatment lengths will vary depending on individual needs. Drs. Joe McIntyre and Dan Whiting provide patients with a personalized Invisalign® treatment timeline during consultations at their Bridgewater, VA practice. To receive your personalized timeline, we invite you to schedule a consultation.
The First Stage of Invisalign® Treatment
Before Invisalign® treatment begins, a thorough dental examination will be performed. During this examination, the teeth will be assessed to determine if Invisalign® treatment is suitable for the patient's needs. Those with severe alignment issues generally require traditional orthodontic treatment such as braces.
If Invisalign® can appropriately meet the needs of the patient, a treatment plan will be devised and impressions will be taken of the teeth. A series of clear, plastic aligners will then be crafted from the impressions and when the aligners are ready, after a week or two, an appointment will be scheduled to ensure proper aligner fit and to officially start the treatment process.
After Two Weeks and Every Two Weeks Going Forward
Invisalign® treatment repositions the teeth over a period of about 6 to 18 months. During the length of treatment, the aligner trays must be worn for about 22 hours a day. Invisalign® trays may be removed while eating and for ease of brushing and flossing the teeth. Each set of trays is worn for two weeks before changing to a new set to gradually reposition the teeth. Periodic orthodontic appointments will be scheduled to check progress throughout treatment and adjustments may be made to ensure treatment is going according to plan.
Once the teeth have reached the desired alignment and Invisalign® treatment is complete, which may take 6 to 18 months, a retainer is generally required to ensure the teeth maintain their new position. Retainers are particularly important for teen patients because their jawbones are still malleable and growing.
The Benefits of Invisalign® Treatment
The many benefits of Ivisalign® treatment have made it a popular choice among those who require teeth straightening treatment. Some of the many benefits include:
- Discreet orthodontic treatment: One of the biggest benefits of Invisalign® treatment is the discreet, nearly invisible aligner trays. Invisalign® allows orthodontics wearers to feel confident and avoid the need for metal braces.
- Comfortable: Invisalign® trays are comfortable. The smooth plastic trays also reduce the risk of gum and lip irritation, which is common with traditional braces.
- Removable: Invisalign® aligners may be removed while eating, allowing patients to enjoy all of their favorite foods, and while brushing and flossing, ensuring a healthy smile.
