Orthodontics: Achieve Straight Teeth and a Proper Bite

Dark-haired woman smiling with bracesMisaligned teeth can not only detract from a patient's appearance, they can also negatively impact dental hygiene, oral function, and jawbone health. At Smiles for Life, we offer multiple orthodontic treatments to help you achieve straight teeth and a strong bite.

Dr. Dan Whiting has undergone extensive training on the treatment of malocclusion (improper teeth alignment), making him your choice for orthodontics in the Bridgewater, VA, area. In addition to traditional braces, we also offer Invisalign® and Six Month Smiles®. The treatment that is right for you will depend on your unique needs, goals, and budget. Our Approach to Orthodontics

Dr. Whiting strives to address alignment issues at their earliest stages, typically when patients are around seven or eight years old. In these cases, he will often place spacers between a child’s teeth. These small elastic bands will separate individual teeth, creating more room for adult molars. This preventive measure can reduce the overall treatment time for braces or even eliminate the need for braces entirely. We also offer expanders for children, which is an appliance that is used as an early intervention to expand the patient's arch, often eliminating or shortening the patient's time in orthodontics. Although we see many orthodontic patients in childhood, we also provide outstanding care for adolescents and adults. Dr. Whiting will evaluate your needs and cosmetic goals to determine the right treatment for you.

Traditional Braces

Metal braces can correct the greatest range of orthodontic issues, including over bites, under bites, cross bites, open bites, and more. With this treatment, Dr. Whiting will attach brackets to teeth and connect them with a metal wire. Over the course of treatment, we will gradually tighten the wire to reposition teeth. The duration of your braces treatment will depend on the severity of your misalignment.

Although we see many orthodontic patients in childhood, we also provide outstanding care for adolescents and adults. Dr. Whiting will evaluate your needs and cosmetic goals to determine the right treatment for you.

Six Month Smiles®

Similar to traditional metal braces, Six Month Smiles® is a short-term orthodontic treatment that uses clear brackets and wires to correct minor to moderate cosmetic alignment issues. The treatment is often used to correct crowding or spacing issues with front teeth.

Invisalign® can be used as a discreet orthodontic treatment for more minor cases of misalignment. During treatment with Invisalign®, you will wear a set of clear, custom-made aligners. Each set of aligners will have a slightly different shape in order to place a gentle force on your dental arches. Treatment times with Invisalign® differ from case to case. However, we also offer Invisalign Express®, which is designed to only address cosmetic issues in around 10 weeks.

Benefits of Orthodontics

Orthodontics can provide you with a diverse range of benefits. Straight teeth can dramatically enhance the beauty of your smile, giving you a more attractive and healthy appearance. In addition, orthodontics can also improve your overall oral health by making it easier to remove bacteria with brushing and flossing. By correcting an improper bite, orthodontics can reduce your risk of tooth erosion and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. We will review the full benefits of each orthodontic treatment option during a personal consultation.
